Can’t Let Go

April 11

SLC Airport

Winter has been listening to some Mariah Carey (Can’t Let Go) and Rick Astley (Never Gonna Give You Up) (odd pairing right? But hey Mariah married Nick Cannon so whatever) because another winter storm is pelting the Sierra. The area stacked up around 4-8″ so far and another 18-24″ for the resorts around Tahoe looks solid. Further south from Tahoe, the greatest amount of snow will fall so it looks like Kirkwood should make out with the most snow.

A solid moisture stream and good dynamics especially the further south you go will help total the snow up as winter tries to hang on. Further north around Tahoe where the jet is not as strong, will get the snow falling via vorticity and good ol fashioned cold air aloft which induces instability (upward motion). The dynamics aren’t the best over the Tahoe area, but very cold temperatures aloft especially for this time of the year, will be very efficient in raising those CCN, accreting, and all those good cloud physics processes to bring the snow over the next 48 hours.

So another wave hits the Sierra after a brief hiatus. Expect some very nice powder and good skiing late this week (if the wind doesn’t cause hold on the lifts, which it might) and this weekend. But enjoy it while you can because warm temperature return quickly with upper 60′s returning to valleys by Monday. But all that means is that some phat spring corn skiing will be in order! Go forth and shred while listening to winter’s playslist…

4 drops now since 2006, still as fun as ever. Big ups to he whom saw a visionary line.

Iphone pic of the waterfall courtesy of Slick Money. I took a few homies down to share the fun. Tie game for me with 2 drops on skis and 2 on the snowboard. Time to make a telemark turn in there soon for the true trifecta!

Snow on the way! Favorable temperatures and large scale dynamics will make for an excellent foot or more along the crest. With coverage what it is (finally!), smiles will be had by all who drop in. The 120 should open soon and spectacular spring riding is just around the corner. Not a bad idea to climb Third Pillar in the morning and ride Chute Out in boardshorts to the beers at the lake in the afternoon. That is California style!
